Online Science-athon/Catching Sunshine
Step 1: Find Out About the Challenge

What's the Science in Catching Sunshine?

Solar Energy

  1. We can't see energy and we can't touch it, but we can see and feel what it does. Solar energy is the energy in the sun's rays. It is produced deep inside the sun.
  2. Solar energy spreads throughout the solar system from the surface of the sun as radiant energy—light energy in visible and invisible forms.
  3. Only a small fraction of the energy from the sun reaches Earth, but it is enough to warm and light it.
    • Almost all life on Earth is a process of using the light and heat energy of the sun.
  4. Solar energy can help us meet our energy needs. For example, it has been used for cooking, drying, heating and cooling buildings, generating electricity, and powering satellites and vehicles. The challenge is to find ways to collect and store solar energy for immediate and later use.
