What Materials Do We Need?

Computer Equipment

  • computer(s) with Internet access and a browser, and set up for printing web pages

Laboratory Supplies

  • a thermometer (calibrated in degrees Celsius) for measuring the outside air temperature near the cooker

  • a container to use as a solar cooker

  • materials for lining and shaping the inside surfaces of the cooker and insulating it

  • a horizontal surface in direct sunshine to place the cooker during testing and data collection

  • a watch to measure the length of time it takes to melt the chocolate chip

  • refrigerated milk chocolate chips (standard size)

  • toothpicks to hold the chocolate chips

  • material to use as a stand for the toothpick and chocolate chip

  • a place to keep the refrigerated chocolate chips cool (examples, a cooler and cool-pack, a container of ice cubes)

  • a watch to measure the length of time it takes to melt the chocolate chip

  • paper towels or napkins for cleaning up
